The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) warns: There is a risk of storm surges on the North Sea at night or in the morning. The fish market in Hamburg is threatened with flooding.

For the German North Sea coast and Emden, the authority predicts a water level up to 1.50 meters higher than the mean high water, and for the Weser and Elbe areas 2 to 2.50 meters higher than the mean high water. Also at the water level in Hamburg-St. Pauli, the floodwaters will be around two meters higher than usual at the peak around 7 a.m. on Monday morning. “The fish market is likely to be flooded,” said Xin Li, a research assistant at the BSH, in an interview with NDR.de on Sunday evening. The Hamburg police called for parked vehicles to be removed from Hafencity and other endangered areas near the Elbe and to secure buildings.

Storm surges of this strength occur on average four to five times per winter season in the North Sea, according to BSH scientist Li. “This season, however, we are already above that.” A detailed map of all current water levels and forecasts is available on the BSH website.
