For some time now, the municipalities in the north-west of Brussels, gathered within the Brussels West police zone, have had suspicions regarding the proliferation of vans on their territory.
”We observed suspicious traffic and behavior”, comments the mayor of Koekelbergeois Ahmed Laaouej (PS), who therefore asked for a vast operation to control the vehicles. “And the results confirm our concerns.”

The action took place at the end of April on avenue de Jette, rue de l’Armistice and in the parking lot of the Basilica, and was primarily aimed at poorly parked vans. A total of 117 vehicles were checked in ten hours. And the offenses detected went well beyond parking.
Two false Ukrainian driving licenses were seized and eight fines with immediate collection were imposed, for a total of €1,706. The police had to make a judicial arrest, three administrative repairs and two legal repairs.
”So there are material elements which show that there is a traffic of false documents. For this kind of fact, it is not improbable to find a larger organization”comments the mayor of Koekelberg, who fears acts of illegal labor.
Mainly vehicles from Eastern European countries were checked. “It is not a question of casting shame on posted workers. But it seemed necessary to send a clear signal: Koekelberg does not tolerate traffic.” Other checks should take place in the north-west of Brussels.
