Vivaqua, whose activities cover the production and distribution of drinking water, the management of sewerage networks and the fight once morest flooding in the Brussels Region, is drowning in debt and is not able to make the investments necessary to the renovation of the sewerage network, reports De Standaard on Thursday.
According to the latest financial information that the newspaper was able to consult, the Brussels intermunicipal corporation faces a debt of one billion euros, while 500 of the 2,000 km of sewers it manages must be renovated, including 220 km are in “very poor condition”.
Only 14 km of sewers renovated last year
In addition, ongoing IT problems for months are causing errors in invoices sent to customers. Finally, personnel costs have increased significantly with successive indexations.
“We can guarantee that water will continue to flow from the tap but the renovation of the sewers is barely possible”summarizes the general director, Laurence Bovy.
The debt is just too big, it’s no longer possible
Last year, Vivaqua carried out the renovation of barely 14 km of sewers, which poses ever greater risks of collapse of parts of the roadways, regrets the director for whom the future of Vivaqua’s activities is no longer guaranteed:“Compared to our income, the debt is simply too great. It is no longer possible”. Laurence Bovy therefore pleads for financial support from the Brussels Region.
