Compared to the Walloons and the Flemish, the people of Brussels are – and this has been confirmed over the years – the least motorized in the country. According to recent data published by Statbel, 54.5% of households in the capital did not own a car in 2022. A percentage significantly higher than Wallonia and Flanders, where less than a quarter of households do not have a car. of vehicle.
In more detail, 36.5% of households in Brussels have a single vehicle, 7.6% have two, and only 1.5% have more than two.
On average, a Belgian household owns 1.06 cars. A relatively stable figure. In the Brussels Region, this rate is 0.57 car/household. A rate down 2% compared to 2021. “This low value is linked to the urban nature of the Brussels territory,” explains the federal statistics body.
Saint-Josse and Sant-Gilles, the least motorized
As always, averages mask large local differences. Depending on the municipality, the motorization rate varies drastically. In the municipalities closest to the city center, the number of cars per household is the lowest in the country.
Saint-Josse is the least motorized municipality in the country with 0.33 vehicles per household. Then follows directly the commune of Saint-Gilles (0.34). Then come Ixelles, Etterbeek and Brussels City.
Conversely, it is in the south-east that we find the most vehicles per inhabitant. In Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, a household has on average 0.9 vehicles. A relatively similar order of magnitude to Watermael-Boitsfort (0.83), Uccle (0.82) and Auderghem (0.8).

Note, in view of the 2021 data, that this motorization rate has fallen slightly in one year in almost all Brussels entities.

More cars if children
If car ownership varies according to locality, it also varies greatly, on average, depending on the configuration of the household. In 2022, 71.8% of Brussels residents living alone did not have a vehicle.
On the other hand, when there are children in the household, the car ownership rate jumps. Only 27.5% of couples with children do without a car. Half of these households have one vehicle, and 17.3% have two.
In single-parent families, however, the average motorization rate is much lower: 56.1% of these households do not in fact have a car.
