Brussels Square Vandervelde and Chaussée de Mons Redevelopment: New Plans and Updates

2023-09-21 13:42:00

Last November, La Dernier Heure presented the plans for the redevelopment of Square Vandervelde, Square Albert I and Chaussée de Mons in Cureghem. It is now confirmed, the permit for this large-scale redevelopment has been granted, confirms Brussels Secretary of State for Urban Planning Ans Persoons (Vooruit). Brussels Mobility will be in charge.

Among the main changes, the section of the roadway between rue de l’Ancienne Gare and square Albert 1er will be made one-way (towards the Pentagon). A bidirectional cycle path on its own site will be added to the section.

Along the Albert 1er Park, the part of the Chaussée de Mons currently heading towards the Pentagon will be closed to cars: all traffic will be transferred to the north of the square. Vehicles coming from Chaussée de Mons and heading towards the canal will have to take rue du Collecteur, quai de l’Industrie and then rue de l’Ancienne Gare, a two-way street.

The roundabout above the canal will also be permanent. New cycle paths will be created, as well as new green spaces and plantations. The area bordering the Quai Demets canal cycle path will be redeveloped into terraces and this path under the bridge will be improved.

Square Vandervelde is also redesigned and widened. Public spaces will be cleared by the diversions. Throughout the sector, 25 on-street parking spaces will be removed, especially from Square Albert 1er.

The preparatory work (primary work) could start in early 2024, with the actual start of the project in the summer of 2024.
