Is it soon the end of scooters parked “anywhere” on the sidewalks in Brussels? In any case, this is the will of the Brussels government which approved, in mid-July, a series of more restrictive regulatory rules for self-service machines. Due to come into force on January 1, 2024, the regulation provides in particular for establishing the obligation of dropzones, i.e. a space specifically designated for picking up and dropping off a self-service scooter, throughout the regional territory.

But nothing stopped the municipalities from moving forward without delay. This was already the case in Saint-Gilles and Ixelles, it will also apply from November 6 in Etterbeek. According to Sudinfo, 53 dropzones are distributed across municipal roads. “We wanted to start as quickly as possible to resolve the problem of scooters abandoned anywhere as quickly as possible. It is important to promote soft mobility in a shared space,” explains Caroline Joway (Ecolo), alderman for Mobility at Sudinfo. “We traced dropzones on municipal roads and the Region on regional roads (…) so as to have a dropzone every 250-300 m. The goal is to be able to park the scooter in all neighborhoods of the town.”
