As in the last two years, at the end of the year, the use of fireworks will be prohibited in public spaces throughout the Brussels Region from December 15 to January 3, the Council announced on Monday. Brussels Minister-President Rudi Vervoort.

Via the Belga agency, he clarified that he had taken this decision following a request from the heads of the local police as well as the emergency services to be able to guarantee as much as possible the safety of their agents on the ground. The police also suggested having a regional approach.

According to the office of the Brussels Minister-President, beyond the ban on the use of fireworks 24 hours a day throughout the aforementioned period, will be prohibited “the possession and transport of entertainment fireworks, including sound cannons or carbide cannons, by individuals in public spaces also 24 hours a day, on December 23, 24 and 25, as well as on December 31 and January 1st.

But this measure relating to possession and transport will only apply from 4 p.m. to 10 a.m. from December 15 to 22 as well as January 2 and 3, so as not to infringe on freedom of trade, in accordance with the jurisprudence. These prohibitions do not target professionals with the required authorizations.

The end-of-year celebrations attract a lot of people to the city and must remain festive moments taking place in a climate of security, both for citizens, our merchants and for the police and our emergency services. The ban on the possession and transport of entertainment fireworks in public spaces is taken to prevent law enforcement from being victims of diversion from the normal use of pyrotechnic means” justified Rudi Vervoort, quoted in a communication from his office.

A careful reading of the decree taken in this sense clarifies that police officers and firefighters have been the target of pyrotechnic devices in recent years and that their safety has thus been seriously threatened. The document also mentions the setting on fire of parked vehicles using such devices.

Failure to comply with the system exposes offenders to fines and/or sentences of up to two weeks’ imprisonment.
