Brussels Police Rally in Support of Convicted Colleagues: Controversy Surrounding Sentencing in Fatal Chase

2023-12-11 11:09:03

This Monday between 9 and 11 a.m., around 450 police officers gathered in front of the Brussels courthouse. They intended to show their support for their three colleagues from the Brussels capital Ixelles police zone, convicted last week for manslaughter. On December 5, the police court handed down prison sentences ranging from 5 to 10 months in prison (half of which were suspended) for a fatal chase in May 2017.

Among the police officers gathered this Monday, many expressed their incomprehension regarding this legal decision. ” Certainly, we are in a state of law and we respect this judgment. But this decision concerns us because it means that in the future we will have to think twice before starting a chase or even before starting a check or verification of a person’s identity. The police officer must enforce the law. But here, the police officer is judged for having done his job “, explained Marc-Margy Durant, provincial president for the Brussels Capital Region of the SNPS union.
