The mother of the baby abandoned last Saturday in a laundromat in the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht was released by the police following her arrest, the prosecution said on Saturday evening. The child had been identified earlier in the day following a man claiming to be the child’s father presented himself to police.

“The investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the incident,” according to the prosecution who will not comment further on the file.

On Saturday, an unknown woman entered a laundromat on rue de la Clinique with a three-month-old baby and a gray stroller around 4:50 p.m. She fled following a few moments in the direction of rue Brogniez. She was dressed in a white sweater and black shorts.

It was a resident of the neighborhood who warned the emergency services on Saturday followingnoon when she found the child crying in the laundromat. Emergency services immediately transferred the girl to the hospital for a medical examination.

The CCTV images not having made it possible to recognize the speakers, the Brussels public prosecutor’s office issued a wanted notice on Thursday to identify the baby and the woman who abandoned him.

That same evening, a man who claimed to be the father, but never recognized the child, surrendered to the police and gave the identity of the mother. This woman was found on Friday evening in a snack bar in Laeken and arrested.
