Brussels MP Fouad Ahidar is leaving Vooruit, he announced on Sunday in a virulent press release in which he pointed out “the numerous blunders, the convictions for racism and sexism”, and the “lamentable management of the party”.
It is a replica of the shock caused by the resignation of Conner Rousseau. Brussels MP Fouad Ahidar published a virulent press release this Sunday in which he announced that he was leaving Vooruit.
“The course taken by the party no longer corresponds to my fundamental values of solidarity, justice, equality and freedom”he declared, targeting in particular the positions taken by the Flemish Socialist Party on immigration.
The incident surrounding the racist remarks of former President Conner Rousseau should have caused “a great ethical upheaval”, he believes. However, in his eyes, the results are disappointing. The almost unanimous support given to Mr. Rousseau at the party office “put his credibility at stake”.
“It is an indelible stain on our political integrity and a testament to the moral decadence at the top of the party”
“Fortunately, there was the resignation but it came too late and left its mark. It is an indelible stain on our political integrity and a testimony to the moral decadence at the top of the party.” Vooruit did not wish to react.
A breakup announced
Active for 25 years in politics, first at ID21, the movement created by Bert Anciaux alongside the Volksunie, Mr. Ahidar had been in difficulty in his party since June 2022, when he refused to vote in favor of the obligation slaughter of animals with stunning. He was then excluded from the Vooruit Office.
In October, his position was weakened once more following comments on the terrorist attack perpetrated by Hamas once morest Israel. In a video dated November 5, the president of the council of the Flemish Community Commission of Brussels (Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommisse – VGC) had notably compared the actions of Israel and the genocide of the Jews during the Second World War.
He also strongly put into perspective the explosion of violence caused on October 7 by “part of Hamas” towards the Israeli civilian population. The wide media coverage of these remarks sparked a wave of indignation on the Dutch-speaking political scene in the capital, in particular because of the position held by Mr. Ahidar. The person concerned had made detailed apologies on several occasions.
Fouad Ahidar will continue to sit in the Brussels parliament, he told Bruzz. In what quality? The question is not yet resolved. Formally, there is no Vooruit group in the assembly. The Flemish socialists wear the One-Brussels label. Mr. Ahidar wishes to continue working with his colleagues. The break he announced targets the national structure of the party.
