Brussels Motorist Dad’s Parking Nightmare: How the 4411 App Led to Unexpected Costs and Fines

In this humble section, allow us to leave aside for a moment the seriousness of the news and the major issues of this world to dedicate a few words to this slice of life of a Brussels motorist dad who, we have no doubt (we hopefully, to reassure themselves), may resonate with more than one reader.

A Saturday morning, small football tournament, north of Brussels. A pretty place not far from the field, the warm-up is regarding to begin: we don’t hesitate, we take without hesitation. We are well aware that we are in a paid parking zone (Brussels has, in any case, become a huge paid parking zone – and expensive). We pull out the slippery tool but so practical since it saves us from walking to the terminal: the 4411 app. We start our payment session via mobile, we take the little one’s crampons on board and go to the stadium.

Five hours and a fair play medal (we never said it was a perfect Saturday) later, the festivities were over. By redoing the matches in the cabin, we forget, and we are sure we are not the only ones (thumbs up, the distracted team), to stop our parking session on our phone. Total costs when lucidity returns to us, at the beginning of the evening only: €14.26. Not nothing.

But there is worse.

Monsieur had taken Madame’s car. And, of course, out of habit, encoded Monsieur’s plate, pre-recorded in the app…

Parking balance for the day: €14.26 (empty) + €35 (!) fine of Parking.Brussels, which increased its rates in May, from 25 to 35 € (the kind of percentage increase you dream of, on your pay slip). The Scan Car, which we see more on our roads than the police, had obviously not missed us. And to think that we found, at the refreshment bar, the Aquarius of the little one a little expensive… Next time, we will take out the bikes!
