Brussels Mobility: Alternatives to North Metro and the Future of Public Transport in Brussels

According to LitterElke Van den Brandt (Groen), Minister of Mobility, would therefore have been responsible since the beginning of the summer for thinking regarding mobility alternatives while waiting for a North metro which will not be finalized before 2034.

On November 21, the second phase of permit applications for the site seemed to be moving forward. Beliris has in fact declared that it has resubmitted adapted plans “taking more into account the opinions of local residents” with Urban Brussels. These plans, which include the construction of seven new metro stations, a 4.5 km tunnel and a depot in Haren, have been “optimized” according to Beliris.

But the wait for this new section still seems long, so Stib and Brussels Mobility looked into 13 possible solutions, presented to the Brussels government. They would result in 4 to 80 million euros in additional expenses, which are not included in the current investment plans.

Complex and expensive solutions

Among the avenues presented, there would be according to Litter improving the frequency, capacity and regularity of tram line 55; the merger of tram lines 4 and 55 might be considered; the diversion of tram 92 towards Bordet / Da Vinci as well as via rue Gallait; the opening of another tram line in parallel; reinforcement of tram 55 with a bus; strengthening of existing bus lines; strengthening of the bicycle network.

Despite this effort, it has already been made clear that certain solutions, such as those concerning tram 55, would not be adapted to demand in the long term. Furthermore, certain technical obstacles might slow down these projects.

One of the avenues is nevertheless considered “interesting” by Stib and Brussels Mobility: that of the opening of a parallel tram line, between Bordet and Botanique. Line 55 would thus be relieved of some of its passengers, while allowing increased mobility in the north-east of the Region. But this option turns out to be the most expensive, requiring nearly 3 km of new infrastructure and the purchase of vehicles. Such an option would only see the light of day in 2032, and would only make sense if the metro 3 project was abandoned.
