Brussels Metro M7 Wheel Issues: Updates, Solutions, and Expert Reports

At the beginning of January, the question was put back on the agenda of the Brussels Parliament at the request of opposition MP Aurélie Czekalski (MR). “The tremors, the noises persist. These residents suffer physically and mentally and their quality of life in our region is tainted,” denounced the liberal.

“The arrival of the M7 metros has increased the level of nuisance for local residents disproportionately,” recognized Minister Elke Van den Brandt (Groen). “And, on a daily basis, we work with the Stib to deal with this particularly invasive problem with local residents to return to the vibration and noise threshold prior to the arrival of the M7s as quickly as possible.”

Problematic wheels

The nuisance would, as a reminder, be caused by abnormal wear of the wheels. Once the problem was identified, the Stib set up a system to detect problematic wheels, in order to act more effectively and treat them as a priority.

Since then, improvements have taken place in some places. “The vibration improvement was assessed by a measurement campaign carried out by the Stib, on the surface at avenue de Broqueville, at the end of May 2023. This campaign demonstrated that the M7s whose wheels were processed now have a signature generally identical to the M6.”

New measurement campaign and an expert report

The structural solution to the problem would be to change the dysfunctional wheels of the subways. But solving the problem proved particularly complex from a technical point of view. We learned this Tuesday that the manufacturer has revised its requirements and that tests are being carried out. But be patient before seeing new wheels on the network… No replacement schedule has yet been given but the minister is talking regarding 2024.

In the meantime, several new measures will be taken, announced the regional Minister of Mobility. Among other things, at the beginning of 2024, a “new noise and vibration measurement campaign” will be launched by Brussels Environment. An independent expert was also mandated by Brussels Mobility to produce a “detailed note”, expected “at the end of the first quarter of 2024.” In addition, the noise ordinance should be revised to include vibrations.
