It’s anything but a surprise, and yet the Brussels sphere has – for far too long – veiled its eyes. Estimates for the construction of a new metro line between the Gare du Nord and Evere have exploded: 2.5 billion, for 4.5 km of tunnel of seven stations. The scenario of a cancellation resurfaces. But once once more, the Brussels government decides… not to decide. The Vervoort executive says he is analyzing the quotes and implores federal help, postponing the inevitable arbitration and the long-awaited moment of political courage.
Certainly, the project is, technically, not obvious. But the difficulties encountered come more from poor management than from the Schaerbeek subsoil. This project alone concentrates the evils of Brussels politics: a badly put together file, a decision taken during the election period once morest the recommendations of experts, shaky financing, strong criticism within the coalition and an unsustainable procrastination. Brussels residents and commuters now risk finding themselves doubly punished: without a metro, and with several tens of millions of euros thrown out the window. A situation that is oh so damaging to the credibility of the capital. Now more than ever Brussels needs a public transport network worthy of a 21st century metropolis.
