Over the past six months, four similar accidents in obscure circumstances have taken place in Brussels metro stations: people have found themselves trapped in station shutters, with sometimes dramatic consequences. In March Porte de Namur, early May at Parvis de Saint-Gilles, late May at Porte de Hal and early June in Rogier. In the latter case, the outcome was fatal: the trapped person lost his life.
In committee on Tuesday, Brussels Minister Elke Van den Brandt (Groen) returned to the facts. “The tragic incidents that have occurred in recent times, when people got stuck in the entrance shutters of metro stations, with a dramatic outcome for one of them, are not the result of technical problems. or malfunction of these shutters. The prosecution descended to Rogier following the death concluded to an accident. The responsibility of Stib has never been called into question.”

According to Van den Brandt, these dramas illustrate a growing “social precariousness”, with “increasingly complex drug addiction problems in our urban environment, of which the STIB stations are a part”. “The STIB has observed for several months an increase in the presence of people wandering, and/or under the influence on its network.” In February, the SubLink platform was created bringing together the Stib and several associations with the aim of guiding people on the move. An additional €816,000 was released this year within this framework.
