Brussels: many tenants will benefit from a rent reduction

In Brussels, 1,300 tenants of public housing will be able to benefit from a reduction in rent. Like other municipalities in the capital, the City of Brussels has decided to socialize its rents. This is a way of reducing the very long waiting lists for obtaining social housing.

To live in social housing in Brussels, the average waiting time is 12 years, because there are too many requests and not enough offers. Across the entire Brussels region, 51,967 people are waiting. One solution would be to socialize the rent of public housing. The measure was presented on Friday by Nawal Ben Hamou, Brussels State Secretary for Housing and Philippe Close, Mayor of Brussels.

Nearly 1,300 tenants will now be offered the socialization of their rents“, explains Nawal Ben Hamou.

To socialize housing, you must first be a tenant in public housing and at the same time be on the waiting list for social housing. If so, the rent will be cheaper.

For example, a single mother who receives 1700 euros per month. Currently, for her public housing, she pays 650 euros in rent. With socialization, she will only pay 374 euros, or 22% of her income.

Ca is part of a range of solutions that we offer today (…) the idea is to have an additional solution“, specifies the Brussels Secretary of State for Housing.

For the socialization of rents, the Brussels region has a budget of 3 million euros.
