The Brussels government announced on Thursday that it had agreed on the future management contract for the Kanal Foundation, created by the Brussels-Capital Region, with the primary mission of creating a museum of modern and contemporary art, in partnership with the Center d’Art Pompidou in Paris, with an opening scheduled for the last quarter of 2025.

This management contract, which covers the next five years, provides the means to open the museum with an average annual operating grant of 20 million euros, said the office of the Brussels Minister-President, Rudi Vervoort (PS), in a press release.

This management contract approved by the regional government also makes it possible “to calmly consider the end of the construction site and to cover the maintenance and management of the future renovated building”. It sets own revenue requirements for the Kanal Foundation up to 60% of its public operating grant.

The site of the former Citroen garage, located on the edge of the canal, place de l’Yser, covers 1.7 hectares and is set to become “a major cultural center of the European capital”. The museum of modern and contemporary art will occupy 12,000 m2 and 7,000 m2 are reserved for the international center of architecture CIVA.

Some 13,000 m2 will be dedicated to an indoor public space intended to be a place of meeting, relaxation, entertainment and education. Finally, 9,000 m2 will go to offices, workstations, technical spaces, as well as an auditorium and parking.

“The management contract also sets the terms of CIVA’s integration into the Kanal museum center and gives CIVA the means to offer, from the opening of Kanal, a museum program focused on architecture, town planning, landscape, gardens and urban ecosystems”, added Mr. Vervoort’s office.
