The fire which broke out on Tuesday followingnoon in a hotel on Place du Jeu de Balle, in Brussels, is now under control, say the capital’s firefighters. The fire left 8 injured.

According to fire spokesman Walter Derieuw, the fire raged on the third floor and in the attic of the building. “It was a squat“, Mr. Derieuw further clarified. “Dozens of people were able to take shelter but three people had to be extracted from the building by our services. Three individuals were taken to hospital and five others were treated at the scene. The medical response plan has been declared and the Red Cross has set up an advanced medical post but, in the meantime, the response plan has already been lifted“.

The causes of the fire are not yet known. An expert from the Brussels public prosecutor’s office will go to the site to investigate.

The Mayor of Brussels, Philippe Close, also went to the scene of the fire to inquire regarding their state of health.
