Brussels Government Measures for Vehicle Retrofitting and Eco-Economic Opportunities

The Brussels government recently adopted the final necessary measures to allow companies in the sector to operate within a specific framework.

In the eyes of the environmental minister, replacing the thermal engine with another, electric, is an ecological solution to contribute to the climate transition. This operation, which can be carried out on all types of vehicles, offers a sustainable alternative to purchasing a new electric vehicle. It is also an economic opportunity for individuals and businesses.

The Brussels measures were developed in consultation with players in the sector and other Belgian political entities, including the Federal Authority.

Previously, retrofitting was technologically possible, but approval and the possibility of registration of the transformed vehicle were an obstacle course. Still according to Minister Van den Brandt’s office, clear and simplified procedures have now been established to allow these vehicles to circulate normally.

Thanks to these new approval rules and the royal decree adopted last June at the federal level, retrofit is now possible in Brussels. Under certain specific conditions, potential installers can obtain approval to offer their services to interested households and businesses.

On the business side, the LEZ “Business” bonus granted by Brussels Economy and Employment supports the purchase of a less polluting utility vehicle. Since 2022, it has also provided financial support of up to 7,500 euros for the retrofit of a utility vehicle for Brussels businesses. This financial support should further increase in early 2024 with the entry into force of new aid for the development and economic transition of businesses supported by Secretary of State Barbara Trachte.
