For its part, Bruxelles Mobilité indicated, via its spokesperson, that the accident occurred as part of the redevelopment work on the public space for which it is responsible, in the context of the construction of tram line number 10 of the STIB. “We face our responsibilities,” she said, via the Belga agency.

According to the spokesperson, the leak occurred as part of this project during the intervention of a subcontractor. An emergency response team from Sibelga was called to the scene. According to Sibelga, the explosion occurred as she arrived on the scene.

“The facade was partially blown away by the explosion,” said fire department spokesperson Walter Derieuw, who indicated that Sibelga was on site to plug the leak, while the escaping gas continued to burn.

Like the spokesperson for Brussels Mobility, it confirmed that three injuries were reported, two of which, construction workers, were treated on site. A third victim, occupant of the house, was transferred to hospital.

Firefighters and police set up a security perimeter. All buildings located within this area were evacuated, including a school and a nursery. The evacuated people were taken care of in a building in the neighborhood.

The gas leak has been blocked, Brussels firefighters said. The latter are now going around the buildings located inside the established perimeter to check that gas has not accumulated somewhere. The evacuation order may then be lifted.

For its intervention, Sibelga closed the gas supply on both sides of this perimeter. Once the fire was completely extinguished, the technical team was able to plug the leak.
