A gang of individuals who attacked walkers at the Cinquantenaire park were arrested, the Brussels-Capital and Ixelles police zone confirmed on Thursday. The arrests follow various searches carried out in recent days.

“Between the beginning of September and the end of last October, the suspects committed several thefts by attacking passers-by, often in groups. The walkers were forced to hand over their valuables and had their bank cards stolen, which were subsequently used to withdraw money,” said the spokesperson for the police zone. “In addition, the victims were sometimes threatened with a knife to the throat, and others were punched in the face, resulting in incapacity to work,” he added.

In collaboration with the Montgomery police zone, the Brussels-Capital and Ixelles police zone identified and arrested the individuals behind these attacks.

The search work allowed the two police zones to identify the suspects one by one. Once the entire gang was identified, several searches were carried out during the week of November 6. “During these searches, 10 suspects were arrested, both minors and adults,” the police said. These were made available to the Brussels public prosecutor’s office, which then requested an investigating judge.

Of the 10 suspects, five of them, adults, were placed under arrest warrant. The five minors were, for their part, placed at the disposal of a youth judge, who decided to place four suspects in a closed IPPJ and the fifth in an open IPPJ.

The investigation continues to determine if the suspects are involved in previous events.
