On one side of the Roman road, the asphalt suffers from the ravages of time. On the other, the coating has been newly replaced. Visible separation of the border between the Brussels Region and the Flemish Region, between Brussels-City and Wemmel.
This border, Annelies and Robert, a Wemmelois couple, suffer the consequences. Since the beginning of this spring, as our colleagues from the Nieuwsblad relate, the couple has seen a dozen parking tickets flood through their mailbox. “We were surprised, shocked”, relates the Wemmeloise. The cause: since the installation of a bus lane and the removal of parking spaces on the Wemmel side a decade ago, residents had become accustomed to parking on the Brussels side. Without sanction… until this spring. Now the scan-car passes through the neighborhood and therefore no longer possible to park freely on the other side of the street.
The couple, who already have more than 200 euros in fines, have three vehicles. One parked at the entrance of the house. The others now have to be parked further in the town. “While there are places in front, in our street”, tells us Annelies, judging the situation “ridicule”. “A Kafkaesque situation”, according to her husband. A neighbor of the couple confirms to us that he too had to pay three royalties.
Two cobblestones in the facade of his store: “Wemmel is becoming Molenbeek”
In addition, Annelies, a physiotherapist by profession, says she has lost many clients since the places were removed. “Crossing the road is difficult for the elderly.“The couple are therefore asking for access to the parking lot on the other side of their street. In some localities, these tolerances between two bordering entities do indeed exist. However, the Brussels alderman for Mobility tells us that it has not received any official request from Wemmel.
On the side of the Wemmeloise authorities, we have not yet registered any request from local residents. According to the mayor, sufficient places are available not far from the Roman road, namely avenue Reine Astrid or rue Profonde. An opinion shared by the Alderman for Mobility, Vincent Jonckheere: “the public domain is not private: it is not always possible to park in front of your door. Just park a little further. It’s a non-problem”indicates the agent, for whom the bus lane is essential to guarantee the fluidity of public transport.
