In a common union front, workers at the Brussels CPAS in Schaerbeek demonstrated on Thursday morning to voice their fears regarding the consequences of the “serious accounting errors” observed since 2017, causing a deficit of 13 million euros for the CPAS, according to the unions.
Around 250 people, according to police figures, gathered at 8:30 a.m. in front of the Public Social Action Center. “The authority has made a mistake, the authority must pay”, we might read on a sign. The staff does not intend to suffer social setbacks in relation to achievements (remuneration, end-of-year bonus, meal vouchers, etc.), nor “pay the bill for the irresponsible behavior of the political and administrative authorities”, underlined the unions in a press release.
The procession then headed towards the Schaerbeek municipal house, Place Collignon, to meet their municipal colleagues, because “this accounting error, which amounts to more than 20 million euros in total, and which will greatly impact the workers of the CPAS, will probably indirectly affect those of the municipality,” underlined the regional secretary of the CGSP, Carine Rosteleur.
Towards a greater workload?
“We met on Wednesday the mayor of Schaerbeek, Cécile Jodogne (DéFI), and the people concerned by the matter. It was confirmed to us that there will be no loss of financial benefits over the next three years, but that they would probably affect employment (replacement of people retiring, reorganization of services, restructuring )”, explained the regional secretary of the CGSP, Carine Rosteleur.
According to her, staff remain very worried because this will result in an insidious increase in the workload, which is already “heavy”. “The trust has been broken. We will therefore remain very vigilant to ensure that, as we informed Ms. Jodogne, all these decisions are taken in prior consultation with the union delegates,” added Ms. Rosteleur.
