Taxi drivers who work at Brussels Airport stopped work on Friday around 3:00 p.m., for two and a half hours. Pierre Steenberghen of the National Group of Taxi and Chauffeur Rental Companies (GTL) expects great solidarity.
Brussels Airport taxi drivers on strike Friday: they are protesting once morest the Dutch exam imposed by Flanders!
Taxi drivers are protesting once morest the Flemish government’s plan to impose a Dutch language exam (level B1) on them from July 1, 2024. They find these language requirements too strict and are demanding concessions for drivers who have been working in the sector since years.
According to Mr Steenbergen, the required level is too high and a majority of drivers risk not passing the test. He points out that the language requirement does not apply, for example, to drivers of the transport company De Lijn, nor to Uber drivers who serve the airport from Brussels.
From next year, Wallonia opens the door to Uber and other taxi applications… but certain details of the decree make people cringe
Taxi drivers from the rest of Flanders, such as Antwerp, Ghent or Bruges, must also take a language test and risk experiencing problems, fears Mr. Steenberghen. According to him, a basic knowledge of Dutch should be sufficient. “At the airport, 90% of taxi customers are English-speaking. The drivers don’t even have the opportunity to practice their Dutch,” he concludes.
Arrival of Uber in Wallonia: above all, do not reproduce the chaos of Brussels, the Walloons do not need a taxi war
