But the tone has changed in Frankfurt, where more credit is being given to the Belgian subsidiary. The newborn, an Airbus A320neo straight from the European manufacturer’s Toulouse factory, is the best in aviation. The plane – which can accommodate 180 passengers – consumes 20% less fuel, representing an annual saving of 3,700 tonnes of carbon, and emits 50% less noise than its previous generation equivalent.

“A very sensitive plane to fly”

Significant advantages in the era of ecological transition and the problems of noise pollution affecting many residents of airports around the world. Inside, the saving is 60% for passengers’ luggage and the lighting system is customizable: it adapts to the passengers’ biorhythm depending on the time of day. Finally, the medium-haul aircraft has a range of 500 km greater than its previous model. “It’s a very sensitive plane to fly,” explains the captain who made this flight from Toulouse.

The Airbus newcomer will make its first commercial flight in “a few weeks”, undoubtedly starting to connect airports from Brussels where the noise problem is major, such as London Heathrow, before reaching more distant destinations such as Egypt. . It will be joined by the end of 2024 by four similar models, also aimed at replacing older aircraft. “We are entering a new era,” enthuses CEO Dorothea Von Boxberg, who recalls that the company had already partly renewed its fleet during the Covid period.

An A320neo costs, at list price, nearly 100 million euros. But Lufthansa, which bought the plane and is leasing it to Brussels Airlines, paid a much lower amount, given the group’s massive purchase of planes from Airbus. The Germans also obtained rebates following delays in constructor. The plane should therefore have been delivered last June to Brussels Airlines. The new A320neo will join the Belgian company’s fleet of 43 Airbus aircraft, including 34 from the A320 family and nine from the A330-300 (long-haul).
