The law providing for a 34% cap for promotions on non-food products is due to come into force in 2024.

Led by Renaissance deputy Frédéric Descrozaille and adopted last March by Parliament, the law intended to “strengthen the balance between suppliers and distributors” must come into force in March 2024. Very quickly, the text provoked an outcry from the side of the distributors, like the boss of Carrefour Alexandre Bompard who asks for a one-year moratorium on its application.

Invited on Sunday by BFM Politique, the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire said he was mixed on the provisions of this text of law.

“There are good elements such as protecting the income of farmers, believes Bruno Le Maire. I also want to reassure them, I will continue to defend the margin of producers.”

On the other hand, the latter declares himself “opposed” to the provision which limits promotions on hygiene products such as “deodorants, shampoos and diapers”. A position he has maintained since the adoption of the law last March.

“We must return to the 34% cap”

According to him, the priority remains the purchasing power of households and these promotions are proving to be a good solution to reduce expenses. “This measure is difficult to defend in times of great difficulty for the purchasing power of households. We must return to the cap at 34%”, he continues. As for the question of the moratorium demanded by Alexandre Bompard, the minister kicks in touch.

“It is to the parliamentarians that we must address ourselves. It can be done immediately but it is on their initiative”, launched Bruno Le Maire.

For his part, the deputy Descrozaille considers the outcry of distributors as a communication operation “and recalls that the resale threshold in the non-food sector is now around 18.9%, while the law allows it to be raised. at 25%.
