The Minister of the Economy also said he was opposed to the indexation of salaries to prices and to the general increase in salaries decided by the State.

At the opening of the social conference on wages this Monday, Bruno Le Maire set his red lines in front of the social partners meeting at the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE).

The Minister of the Economy notably mentioned “three impasses”, starting with “the indexation of salaries to inflation”. If Belgium applies it, “the employment rate” across Quiévrain “is 66%, compared to more than 70% in France, so we must avoid the indexation of salaries to inflation”, he said. said.

And to continue: “The second impasse is the boost to the minimum wage. We all want to say ‘We are going to increase the minimum wage’, but the economic results behind it are to threaten the employment of the most vulnerable and the least qualified. Finally, Bruno Le Maire said he was opposed to “the general increase in wages decided by the State”, because “we are in a market economy, the State does not set wages, the State does not set the price”.

Increase productivity

The tenant of Bercy has, however, identified some avenues which might lead to improving the remuneration of employees, the first being the increase in productivity: “The relative impoverishment of France and the European continent can be summed up in one word: the loss of productivity of the European economy. Europe must gain in productivity. This must be a commitment of all European states.”

Bruno Le Maire also indicated that more needed to be done for equal pay between women and men, before reaffirming the objective of an employment rate of 80% in ten years and an unemployment rate to 5% at the end of the five-year term. But “there are obstacles in the French social model which mean that if we remain idly, if we leave the French social model as it is, we will never achieve our objective of 5% unemployment rate in 2027 “.

The minister also said he was in favor of further developing profit-sharing and participation in companies. He finally said he was ready to think regarding the “profile of reductions in charges”, on condition of “not worsening the burden on public finances, opening up a wage dynamic and guaranteeing full employment”.
