A Two-Game Suspension for Bruno Henrique
Bruno Henrique will miss Flamengo‘s final match of the Brazilian Championship against Vitória on Sunday, October 8. The two-game suspension is a crushing blow for the Rio club and comes after the appeals process failed to overturn the initial penalty.
The punishment stems from a tough challenge on Corinthians’ Matheuzinho during the second leg of the Copa do Brasil semi-final match on October 20. The incident, deemed a serious disciplinary infraction, drew criticism, even as Henrique’s team ultimately progressed.
Adding emotional weight to the situation, the match against Vitória will also be Gabigol’s farewell game before he departs the club.
Appeals Denied, Suspension Upheld
Flamengo appealed the initial two-game suspension handed to Henrique, but the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) rejected their plea, leaving the player sidelined.
In upholding the decision, the STJD emphasized the severity and potential for harm stemming from Henrique’s tackle. Matheuzinho, the target of recourse from Henrique, required stitches following the challenge.
“The Commission considered the seriousness and harmful potential of the infraction, so much so that the full-back needed six stitches after being hit by the defendant’s boots. The Prosecutor’s Office believes that the Commission’s decision will be fully maintained,” said Attorney General Paulo Emílio Dantas, as he argued to maintain the suspension.
The case’s rapporteur, auditor Antonieta Pinto, affirmed the initial distinction remain unchanged.
➡️ “It is important to highlight that there is no impropriety in the application of the suspension directed to the athlete Bruno Henrique, especially when looking at the images brought in the opinion of the Prosecutor of the Superior Court of Sports Justice, which illustrate the words written in the match summary,” Pinto insisted.
➡️ In her assessment, she declared: “I do not see in the appeals reasons suitable facts and grounds for this rapporteur to conduct a vote to reduce the penalty applied, which was set at the minimum possible, given the recklessness observed. Strongly based on the reasons outlined above, I consider it prudent to maintain the decision made by the 4th Disciplinary Commission of the STJD in its entirety.”
