Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) wants to take a close look at the promotion of photovoltaic systems. “It cannot be the case that VAT is reduced and then it is not passed on,” he says in the “Kurier”. “The controls absolutely have to be intensified,” he says, referring to the Federal Competition Authority (BWB).
“We absolutely have to look at the price situation this year so that we have comparison options next year and so that the Federal Competition Authority can intervene accordingly,” says the government politician. This also applies to other areas such as gas stations or supermarkets.
The powers of the Federal Competition Authority had just been strengthened by the government. Only then can the passing on of the sales tax exemption for photovoltaic systems be controlled. Competition monitoring can now also be carried out using non-public data.
From January 1st, photovoltaic systems purchased in Austria are exempt from sales tax. Retailers are legally obliged to pass this on to end customers. To date, however, the BWB has lacked the legal authority to carry out controls. In the future, it will be able to carry out industry investigations even if it is suspected that the mandatory pass-on of tax cuts is not taking place.
