Boston Bruins Honor Century of Hockey with Bear Statue
A bronze bear now stands watch over Causeway Street, serving as a symbol of the rich history and enduring spirit of the Boston Bruins as they celebrate a century of hockey. The 6-foot-tall, 10-foot-long monument, unveiled on November 30th in Portal Park just outside TD Garden, is the centerpiece of the Bruins Centennial celebration.
The monument isn’t just a tribute to the team’s storied past, but also a dedication to the fans who have cheered on the Black and Gold for generations. “Today, as we unveil this new Bear statue, we mark not just a milestone in our team’s history,” said Charlie Jacobs, CEO of the Boston Bruins, “but a symbol of the enduring spirit of this franchise and its fans.” Jacobs expressed gratitude to the collaborative effort that made the statue a reality, “We are proud that this statue will greet generations of hockey fans, players and all who pass by, reminding them of the rich legacy we have built together and the exciting future that lies ahead.”
Nicknamed the “Heart of the Hub,” the monument portrays a powerful and majestic bear – a symbol deeply rooted in the Bruins’ identity since the club’s inception.
Created by renowned sculptor Harry Weber, the statue is composed of 90 individual bronze pieces expertly welded together and carefully positioned on a 28-inch-high plinth. “Creating two monuments that represent the Bruins’ storied legacy and heritage has been a privilege,” said Weber.
The inscription on the plinth reflects the core values that united the team and its dedicated fanbase over the last 100 years. “Though originally from St. Louis, Boston has always held a special place in my heart, and it means the world to have had the opportunity to sculpt two symbols of the team’s greatness for such passionate fans,” added Weber, referring to his previous creation – the iconic Bobby Orr “The Goal” statue which graces the TD Garden entrance.
The unveiling of the Bear statue coincides with a weekend packed with Centennial celebrations, including appearances by Bruins alumni, interactive events for young fans, and more. The Bruins organization, in partnership with the city, aimed to unite fans of all ages under the common thread of “Bear Pride.”
The celebration of the Bruins’ rich history began early in 2023 with numerous interactive exhibits, community initiatives, and special appearances, all culminating in the Centennial Game on December 1st. The Bruins, including fans, reflect on 100 years of passion, adversity overcome, and countless memories made.
“As one of the Original Six teams in the National Hockey League, the Bruins and their iconic bear have built a historic legacy in Boston and among hockey fans everywhere,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “As we unveil this statue, which act as gateways to our city and stands as a symbol to the Bruins owners desire to build a community around their team,” said Mayor Wu.
“As we unveil this statue, we honor not only the team’s incredible achievements but also the dedication, passion, and spirit of the players, coaches, and fans who have made the Bruins an enduring symbol of excellence in our state,” said Governor Maura Healey. “Our administration was proud to partner with the Bruins
on this memorial, which celebrates the Bruins’ deep connection to Massachusetts and their lasting impact on our
communities. Today, we reflect on 100 years of history and look forward to more success and memories to come,”
