With the mercury promising to plunge, the Brussels Region will activate in the coming days a “severe cold” plan allowing field organizations to open new reception places for homeless people, we learned on Thursday. office of Brussels Minister of Social Action Alain Maron.

Bruss’help, the regional organization which coordinates emergency aid measures for homeless people in the capital, indicates that it is in the process of finalizing the operational part, and cannot yet confirm the precise details (when, and how many places).

According to Maron’s cabinet, which was consulted with those of Brussels Minister-President Rudi Vervoort and Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Nicole de Moor, the plan should be activated on Monday. On that day, the IRM (Royal Meteorological Institute) forecasts maximums not exceeding -1 degree across the country.

Temperatures are expected to dip well below zero overnight. The objective will be to provide additional places open permanently (day and night), for a period of one month, in infrastructures managed by the Red Cross and by Samusocial.

In total, the cabinet mentions around 155 possible emergency places. Bruss’Help, responsible for operationalization, examines on Thursday what the real possibilities are, and should communicate concrete measures on Friday, specifies the organization.
