Brown University is popular with the LGBTQ+ community, with nearly 40% of students identifying with this community.
38% of students at the instate university in the state of Rhode Island identified as gay, bisexual, queer, asexual or pansexual, according to a survey by the university’s student newspaper.
That’s five times higher than the national average at other US universities, reported the New York Post.
The daily stressed that this percentage had more than doubled since 2010. It was then 14%.
According to Brown University student Josephine Kovecses, society is more open than it once was, which contributes to the high percentage.
“Queer people mightn’t open up regarding their identity in the past,” she said. It’s nice to see that the number is increasing and that students can open up, especially within our university.”
Brown University was founded in 1764. It has just over 10,000 students, according to its website.
