Brothers are convicted of scheme involving fake iPhones and iPads

Two brothers who ran a scheme to sell iPhones e iPads fraudulently were sentenced to prison this week in San Diego (in the United States), according to information from Times of San Diego.

The convicts are Zhimin e Zhiting Liao, who received sentences of 41 months (regarding 3 years and 4 months) each. It is worth noting that the men were indicted in 2019, along with a third brother, Zhiwei Liaowho is expected to be sentenced at the end of this month.

The scheme involved receiving counterfeit iPhones from China and exchanging these devices at Apple stores in the US. The genuine products they received in exchange were then exported to cronies in foreign countries, resulting in a total loss of regarding US$6.1 million for Apple.

According to prosecutors in the case, the defendants tried to exchange more than 10 thousand products counterfeited over 8 years. While one of the brothers would have personally visited 105 Apple stores in 22 American states, the other went to at least 200 stores in 18 American states and also in Canada.

Prosecutors also accused the brothers’ wives of various roles in the scheme. They each also pleaded guilty and were sentenced to three years probation. Eight other people involved also pleaded guilty.

As part of the agreement with the court, the brothers gave up five homes in San Diego, in addition to US$250 mil arising from crime and more than 200 iPhones linked to the scheme, according to the US Attorney’s Office.
