Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake Review – Visual and Performance Enhancements Take This Classic Adventure to New Heights in 2024

Josef Fares became an icon in the games industry following receiving critical and critical acclaim with It Takes Two. The cooperative adventure took many by surprise, but in many ways it was a game nearly a decade in the making, with Fares showing off his creation back in 2013 when the harrowing Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons arrived Talent. In 2024, this very adventurous game will return as a remastered experience, with eye-catching modern graphics and some extra bells and whistles.
But before I discuss what these modern improvements are and how they enhance or impact Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, let me first mention that the elements that were retained still hold up extremely well. The story is both engaging and heartbreaking, the game systems are ingenious and unique, the level design and settings are stunning and confusing, and the added exploration opportunities are a delight, bringing welcome charm and heart to a storyline that’s often very, very tragic. Regardless of how the new improvements and features impact the actual Brothers experience, if you’ve never had the chance to play the game, this remaster is the perfect opportunity to do so, and I recommend you do so as it continues It’s short, meaning you can browse the game in just a few hours.

But anyway, new elements. The most important are visual and performance improvements. All you have to do is watch the trailer to see that Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is a graphic delight. It’s stunning and beautiful at almost every turn, and it’s clear that the decision to remake this game rather than simply remake it was a very smart choice on the part of the folks at Avantgarden. Levels feel more alive and realistic than ever, colors are darker and more vivid, characters are easier to relate to, and as you complete chapters you fall more and more in love with the world, thanks to its excellent graphics. In terms of performance, on PS5 this is generally very good, but I noticed a slight drop in framerate here and there and even encountered some bugs occasionally, and during platforming I managed to get characters stuck where they shouldn’t be Points that resulted in me having to exit the main menu or restart at the most recent checkpoint.
Instead, gameplay-wise, this is where I found Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake to be more conflicting. To be clear, the puzzle design and platforming elements are well handled and implemented, conversely, the actual control scheme is more of a challenge. Since this remake features the ability to play co-op on separate controllers from the start, you have to wonder why nearly every mechanic in the game is offered on analog sticks and triggers, and why the developers didn’t seek to accommodate some Further buttons to help alleviate the weird feeling of using the same trigger to simultaneously grab one ledge and jump to another, for example. Likewise, the nature of controlling two characters simultaneously with separate sticks is an incredible thing, and for the single-player elements I personally wouldn’t mind simply switching between characters when necessary, otherwise leaving the unused The character follows automatically. This would be an improvement and would just make the game less annoying at times.

Here is an ad:

Since this is a very short game and the design is very linear, there aren’t many other tweaks. Some people mentioned that the NPCs and enemies have been improved and are more responsive and challenging, but I personally didn’t notice a difference here. The soundtrack was also re-recorded with a live orchestra, and while I won’t deny that the game’s music and atmosphere are pretty good, it doesn’t quite impress as much as the graphical improvements.
So, when you boil it down to Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake, the main thing to take away from it is that this is still a great adventure experience, except now it uses graphics that suit its entertaining gameplay. This is as pure a remaster as you can get, and it doesn’t really diverge too much from the original, or even add much that’s worth chattering regarding, aside from its visual and performance enhancements. I’d recommend picking this up if you’ve never played this game before, as the story is great and, as sad as it is, there isn’t much reason to go back here if you’ve already played the original game.
