Brother of “El Smily” arrested, with a criminal record of five crimes

Alleged gang member nicknamed “El Burro” and brother of alias “El Smily” was captured in Zone 5 of Mixco. He has five previous convictions for the same number of crimes.

The alleged Mara 18 gang member, José Manuel Lemus Espinoza, 41, alias “el Burro, Gordo or Pelón,” was captured this Wednesday, August 21, during a police operation led by the 16th police station in the Primero de Julio neighborhood, zone 5 of Mixco, police sources reported.

According to records from the National Civil Police (PNC), “El Burro” has five previous convictions for the same number of crimes; in addition, the arrest warrant against him is for extortion.

The PNC reported that the detainee is the brother of Axel Danilo Ramírez Espinoza, alias “el Smily,” who is already in prison.

“This criminal group is dedicated to intimidating and extorting its victims in different areas of Mixco, as well as in Zone 19 of the capital. With this case, there are now 1,223 arrests for extortion this year nationwide,” said the PNC.

The PNC reported that “El Burro” was arrested in March 2019 in the La Florida neighborhood, zone 19, when he was traveling in a white car and carrying a gun illegally; in addition, on May 9 of this year, he was captured on charges of extortion.

They point out that since 2005 to date, he has four previous convictions for the crimes of possession for consumption, illegal possession of a firearm, conspiracy, illicit associations and extortion.

“This individual is a coordinator and member of the Mara 18 gang and brother of Axel Danilo Ramírez Espinoza, alias “el Smily,” security forces added.
