Bronchiolitis: Success of the immunization campaign and prioritization towards infants

2023-09-26 14:10:50

Deployed since Friday September 15 throughout France, the new preventive treatment once morest bronchiolitis has had a very high level of support among parents of infants. Faced with this welcome

positive, the Ministry of Health and Prevention is adapting its strategy in order to prioritize protecting children most at risk of being hospitalized.

A treatment adherence rate of more than 60%

Non-compulsory preventive treatments generally have an adherence rate which varies between 5 et 10%. However, today, the rates of adherence to this new preventive treatment today exceed the 60%, and even reach 80% in some establishments, which is excellent news.

Priority given to infants most at risk

Faced with this success at the start of the immunization campaign and in the interest of good management of available stocks, the Ministry of Health and Prevention has decided to reserve the doses of nirsévimab 50mg in maternity wards (suitable for infants weighing less than 5kg). In fact, infants less than one month old are

those most at risk of developing a serious form of bronchiolitis. The ministry also recalls that there is an alternative available for certain high-risk infants eligible for palivizumab (Synagis).

Pharmacies can continue to place their orders normally. nirsévimab 100 mg. For better dose management, the Ministry of Health and Prevention, however, insists to pharmacists that these orders must be made on the basis of medical prescriptions and are limited to 5 doses per order.

Finally, the Ministry of Health and Prevention reminds all parents of infants that prevention and respect for simple barrier gestures constitute essential measures in the face of the epidemic.

The start of this immunization campaign is a real success, and we must all congratulate ourselves: parents, healthcare workers, pharmacists, public authorities. It is the result of collective coordination and a major advance for the health of infants. Adherence to this preventive treatment demonstrates that

prevention and care policy are closely linked. This preventive treatment must obviously be associated with simple but essential actions to protect the youngest from this epidemic. Let’s be vigilant collectively.

Aurélien Rousseau, Minister of Health and Prevention.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention launched an information campaign on September 18 to

promote the new preventive treatment and remind people of the six barrier gestures:

Wash your hands before and following each change, feeding, meal or cuddle;

Ventilate the entire home regularly;

Wear a mask in case of cold, cough or fever;

Avoid taking your child into confined public places;

Do not share unwashed bottles, pacifiers or cutlery;

Do not smoke near babies and children.
