Bronchiolitis epidemic: “We must expect an impact on pediatric services”, SPF alert – LINFO.re

Caution is required in mainland France in the face of the bronchiolitis epidemic and the circulation of Covid-19 leading to potential competition between the two viruses.

Rise in indicators

The numbers related tobronchiolitis outbreak rise to a crescendo in Metropolitan France. Four French regions have already exceeded the epidemic threshold, namely Île-de-France, Hauts-de-France, New Aquitaine and Occitanie. A situation that aggravates pre-existing tensions in the hospital and in the emergency room. This year, the epidemic started a little earlier and health professionals are still unable to predict its evolution. “An impact on pediatric services is to be expected”, warned this Friday Public Health France (SPF). During a press briefing, Sophie Vaux, from Public Health France, declared that the current situation shows an increase in epidemiological indicators, an increase in hospitalizations.

Lack of nursing staff

The French are urged to be cautious because of the circulation of Covid-19 and the potential competition between the two viruses. Sophie Vaux then calls for emphasizing the importance of barrier gestures to limit the circulation of the virus. The epidemic of bronchiolitis runs from September 15 to February 15 every year. “The problem is not so much the epidemic as the lack of caregivers to deal with it. Our difficulty is there, the rest, we know how to do it”released Thursday evening in The Parisian Professor Stéphane Dauger, head of pediatric resuscitation at the Robert-Debré hospital in Paris.

The bronchiolitis is a respiratory infection that affects the small bronchi. The childhood illness is caused by a very common and highly contagious respiratory virus. Every year, 30% of children under 2 are infected and some have to be hospitalized.
