the essentials Every year, the arrival of autumn marks the return of epidemics. Among them, bronchiolitis which affects the youngest. In recent days, indicators have observed a resumption of epidemic activity in France.

Public Health France has just published its first situation update concerning the bronchiolitis epidemic. No region is yet on alert, however, “an increase in activity linked to bronchiolitis is observed in mainland France for all syndromic surveillance indicators”. The increases are comparable to those observed in the two years prior to the same period.

Emergency visits for children under 2 years old for suspected bronchiolitis increased by 84% between September 11 and 17, hospitalizations jumped by 99%, figures which must, however, be put into perspective. In fact, cases of bronchiolitis represent only 4% of emergency room visits, and 9% of hospitalizations.

Monitor symptoms

The number of children cared for by the SOS Médecins network also jumped by 115%, with cases of bronchiolitis representing 3% of their interventions. The epidemic is therefore back, but the number of cases is still low. Health professionals still call for vigilance and invite parents to closely monitor possible symptoms of bronchiolitis. As a reminder, bronchiolitis begins with a simple cold (blocked or runny nose) and cough. Then, the cough is more frequent, breathing can become wheezy. The child may have difficulty breathing and have difficulty eating and sleeping. He may have a fever.
