After Île-de-France, Martinique and Guadeloupe, the Brittany, Pays de la Loire and Guyana regions entered the epidemic phase this Wednesday, October 18.
The annual epidemic is growing in France. In its weekly vigilance bulletin, Public Health France (SpF) announced this Wednesday that Brittany, Pays de la Loire and Guyana were entering an epidemic phase of bronchiolitis.
“The activity linked to bronchiolitis in community medicine and in hospitals continued to increase for bronchiolitis in children under 2 years old”, even if “at the hospital level, the increases observed remained lower than those of the two seasons “, indicated SPF.
The previous week, Île-de-France, Martinique and Guadeloupe had also been placed in the epidemic phase.

21 babies in intensive care
In this third week of October, 396 SOS doctors medical procedures carried out for children under 2 years old were linked to bronchiolitis, or 6% of all procedures. For comparison, the progression is slightly lower than that of 2021-2022. Last year, it was at this time that medical procedures exploded, in the context of a triple epidemic.
At the hospital, 597 children, including 564 under the age of one, were hospitalized for bronchiolitis. Hospitalizations following going to the emergency room for bronchiolitis in children under two years of age increased by 15% compared to the previous week.
21 children were hospitalized in the intensive care unit following going to the emergency room. They represent 1% of children under the age of two seen in emergency departments for bronchiolitis.
An immunization campaign
Bronchiolitis, most commonly caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), causes babies to have difficulty breathing. Generally not serious, it can however lead to visits to the emergency room and hospitalizations.
Last season, the epidemic had been of unprecedented scale for more than ten years, driving tens of thousands of babies to hospitals in persistent crisis and already struggling with Covid and the flu.
One of the big issues of the season is whether the launch of a vast baby immunization campaign, via the Beyfortus preventive treatment from the Sanofi laboratory, will have been effective in reducing hospitalizations. Victim of its success, this treatment has now been reserved for maternity wards waiting for new stocks.
