The Broeklin mega-project on the outskirts of Brussels is coming to fruition. We learned at the end of the year that Flanders has just issued the permit to build this vast commercial zone on an abandoned industrial site in Machelen, on the edge of the Ring, a stone’s throw from the Vilvoorde viaduct, Buda station and the boulevard de la Woluwe.
This file is not new. There was long talk of a Uplace commercial project, ultimately abandoned following numerous legal proceedings. For this new Broeklin version, a permit had already been issued in 2022, then canceled for lack of a conclusive nitrogen emissions analysis study.
Since then, water has flowed under the viaduct, and the developer has returned to the charge. With success. Among the conditions for granting the permit, it is notably required to provide a shuttle service to Vilvoorde station. In addition, supermarkets will not be able to exceed 600 m².
After protests and vandalism, Vilvoorde will modify its Good Move mobility plan in August: “There are too many construction sites at the same time”
3,000 jobs created
The project includes shops, offices, catering, workshops and green spaces. In total, 3,000 jobs should be created.

Critical of previous versions of the project, Mayor Hans Bonte (Vooruit) is now more positive. “We still need to study the file in depth, but at first glance it looks good.”
Not far from there, near Vilvoorde station, another major project should come to fruition within 10-20 years: the reconversion of the Renault site. 2,500 housing units are planned, as well as a hospital, offices and a campus.
