“We need a healthy forest for our future generations. Trees not only bind CO2, but are also of great importance as water reservoirs. That’s why I think the OÖN initiative is very successful,” says Martin Moser (VP), Mayor of Bad Zell. This summer, the community implemented a tree planting initiative in which more than 600 trees and bushes were distributed to farmers and garden owners through collective orders. As chairman of the Freistadt District Chamber of Farmers, Moser is also involved in projects that support forest owners in equipping their forests with tree species that can survive longer periods of heat and drought.
Living with the forest
In the Bohemian Forest community of Aigen-Schlägl, people learn to live with the forest from an early age. Mayor Elisabeth Höfler was also happy to receive two seedlings from OÖNachrichten. She is happy to support the initiative. The forest has a double and triple significance in the Šumava region: not only as a recreational area and backdrop for tourism, but also as a drinking water reservoir and as an economic basis for forestry operations.
But trees don’t just contribute to improving the climate in the forest. In Freistadt, trees were planted on the northeast side of the main square – i.e. where it is hottest on a summer followingnoon – which can absorb and store a particularly large amount of rain and surface water on site. This improves the microclimate and relieves pressure on the sewer system, explains Mayor Christian Gratzl (SP). Freistadt is pursuing another tree initiative with the so-called trees of life: a tree is planted in the community forest for every newborn. (live, fur)
