Would you like to grow your nails but they keep breaking? Here are the possible reasons.

Weakened, your nails thin, soften, crack and always end up breaking. This problem, without being pathological, usually appears with age. But it can have other causes, such as certain aggravating factors or pathologies.

Thus, fragile nails are sometimes a sign of thyroid diseases, such as hypothyroidism. To make sure you don’t have it, talk to your doctor.

Other factors contributing to nail fragility include prolonged use of polish, excessive washing, or exposure to strong soaps and detergents. Certain dermatoses such as psoriasis or mycosis also affect the structure of the nail. Biting your nails also weakens them.

Conditions that are too dry or too wet can also contribute. With very frequent exposure to water, the nails may soften and peel off because as “the structure of the nail is by nature porous, water makes it more vulnerable. It swells the layers of keratin, separates them and dries them out,” explains the Canadian Dermatology Association.

How to prevent this weakening?

To reduce the risk of your nails breaking, dry your hands and nails thoroughly following each wash. Also remember to hydrate them, especially in times of extreme cold or drought.

Avoid unsuitable cosmetic products (too abrasive solvents, etc.) and protect your hands with gloves when using detergent products.

Finally, in case of nail fungus, “the application of an antifungal gel or varnish may be sufficient if the condition is limited”, indicates the La Roche Posay laboratory. But if it is more extensive, consult your doctor.
