British tourists escalate the “bath towel war” in Spain

The fight for good spots at the pool is becoming increasingly grotesque: British holidaymakers queue for two hours at dawn and send their children to outdo older tourists.

In Spanish seaside resorts there is often a «bath towel war»: everyone wants the best spot by the pool.

In order for this to work, the sun-seekers sometimes have to wait in line for two hours.

They have hardly placed their towels in the morning when they take them off once more and strengthen themselves following the exertion.

Holidays are actually there to relax and unwind. But for many hotel guests in the seaside resorts in Spain, the holiday also begins relentless fight for the best places at the pool – and tourists are happy to make sacrifices for this.

The “Daily Mail” reports from a hotel near Malaga that holiday-hungry Brits sometimes stand in a queue for two hours shortly following sunrise to get their preferred seats. The aim is to sprint to the desired loungers following the pool has opened and to mark or occupy them with a bath towel. They bring chairs and books to make the waiting time bearable.

Parents send children ahead

But as soon as the pool area opens at 10 a.m., there is no holding back: As an eyewitness told the newspaper, “madness” breaks out. People would literally sprint in, sometimes pushing their faster kids ahead of them, who would then overtake and outpace less mobile older vacationers. The woman continues: “I was there the week before the holidays started, so God knows how it is now”. The woman knows that the places near the children’s pool with the slides are particularly popular in her hotel. And another guest observed that the proximity to the place where you can help yourself at the beer tap is particularly popular.

Once you have a reservation, you go to breakfast

Once the lounger has been reserved, the stress falls away from people and they go to great lengths to quarrel. A strange picture emerges: the sun loungers are all covered with towels, but the pool remains deserted.

The hotel in Benalmádena is far from the only one where the problem is known. This is how tourists on Tenerife have the name «Beach Chair Warriors» acquired because they sneaked to the sun loungers and laid out their towels up to three and a half hours before the opening of the pool areas. However, the British are not the only ones who “fight” like this: Locals on the Costa Blanca were observed laying out their mats on the beach before dawn and setting Spanish flags next to them in the style of the first astronauts on the moon.
