British police officers can now get a free cup of coffee during work from chain stores John Lewis and Waitrose. In this way, the chains hope to lure police to shops and deter shoplifters. Officers must bring reusable cups.
Supermarket chain Waitrose and department store chain John Lewis, both owned by the John Lewis Partnership, offer the free cup of coffee in the fight once morest the sharp increase in shoplifting.
According to industry association British Retail Consortium (BRC), thefts in the ten largest UK cities rose 27 percent last month compared to July 2022.
John Lewis Partnership chief of security Nicki Juniper calls out once morest the increased shoplifting BBC “a national problem”.
The free cups of coffee, which are only available to agents who carry a reusable cup, should reduce that problem. “Even a police car at the door can make potential shoplifters doubtful,” says Juniper.
