A British man was killed in a hotel in Kramatorsk, Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine, on the 24th when it was struck by a Russian missile, as reported by the news agency Reuters. This was confirmed on the 25th.
The deceased was identified as Ryan Evans, a security adviser for Reuters. At the time of the attack, six other Reuters staff members, including Evans, were at the Hotel Sapphire in Kramatorsk. This city is under Ukrainian control but is located close to the eastern front line.
Ukrainian authorities reported that the hotel was hit by a Russian missile, though Russia has not issued any comments regarding the incident.
A spokesperson for Reuters stated, “We are urgently seeking more information about the attack, including coordinating with the Kramatorsk authorities, and are providing support to our colleagues and their families.”
He added, “Our deepest condolences go to Ryan’s family and loved ones. Ryan supported many of our journalists covering events worldwide, and we will miss him greatly.”
Additionally, he noted that two other news staff members were hospitalized, one of whom was receiving treatment for serious injuries, besides Evans.
The Ukrainian national police previously reported that the body of a 40-year-old British man was recovered from the hotel rubble at 6:35 PM on the 25th after a 19-hour search.
President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his “condolences to the family and friends” of the deceased in a Telegram message, declaring, “This is Russian terrorism, day after day.”
Previously, Reuters had released a video depicting a section of the hotel being entirely destroyed by Russian airstrikes, with firefighters attempting to clear the debris.
In a statement, the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office indicated that the hotel was likely hit by a Russian Iskander-M short-range ballistic missile.
Kramatorsk is only 20 kilometers from the Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine and has been subjected to regular attacks, leading to civilian casualties, including that of renowned Ukrainian writer Victoria Amelina.
In recent months, Russian forces have made slow yet steady gains in eastern Ukraine.
