Sunak topped the list with 118 votes. Two white women came in second and third: former Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt (92 votes) and Foreign Secretary Truss (86 votes), just six votes apart. Kimi Badnoch, an African-American former undersecretary, was eliminated with only 59 votes.

On July 20, the three candidates will also face a round of voting until the last two are left. Then, 160,000 Conservative Party members will vote on the final 2 candidates, and the winner will succeed Johnson on September 5 as the leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Sunak, 42, is the son of Indian immigrants. He graduated from Oxford University and worked for Goldman Sachs, an internationally renowned investment bank. He was elected to the British Parliament at the age of 35, and was promoted to Chancellor of the Exchequer in less than five years. However, Sunak attended the “Party Gate” with former Prime Minister Johnson in June this year, and was fined by the police for violating the blockade regulations during the epidemic, attracting public criticism.
