British police warn about violence against women

Violence against women and girls has reached serious levels in the UK. This is the conclusion of a report by the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC). According to statistics, more than 1 million acts of violence against women and girls were recorded in England and Wales alone in the 12 months of 2022 and 2023. These include sexual and domestic violence, stalking and child abuse, among others.

This equates to nearly 3,000 crimes per day, or 20% of all crimes if fraud is not included. The report states that at least one in 12 women becomes a victim every year. The number of unreported cases is also likely to be high. And violence is increasing: compared to 2018 and 2019, the number of crimes increased by 37%. The report calls this a “national emergency.”

The association called on the government to establish a national public safety center to address issues at all levels. It is impossible to solve this problem with existing agencies and law enforcement alone.

Assistant Chief Constable Maggie Blyth, who is responsible for the issue, said: “A single point of contact within the police force that brings together specialist skills and capabilities will help the force improve its response to violence against women and girls.”

The association called for a cross-social response to the “horrendous extent” of the violence. The government must come up with a plan to prevent all forms of sexual abuse and ensure victims have the right to treatment assistance.

Technology companies should also be held accountable. These must prevent boys from encountering misogynistic content online. Bryce cited the example of American and British influencer Andrew Tate, who radicalized young people with his misogynistic attitudes, according to the BBC.
