It continues straight away with the tenth round of the 2023 Formula 1 season at historic Silverstone.

Toto Wolff on Great Britain

We’re happy that following a tough weekend in Austria we’ll be able to race once more straight away. We got a handful of points but we didn’t have the pace to do much more. The field is incredibly tight behind Red Bull and there are fluctuations every weekend. Part of this is track specific, another part is the upgrade cycle throughout the field. At Spielberg we ended up on the wrong side of this equation, but we have a chance to hit back right away.

The team has been working hard to analyze our performance and learn lessons from it. We took the result with composure and will try to regain the momentum that we have built up in the past few races. With the next upgrades and experiments coming up at Silverstone, there is reason for optimism. However, we do not want to be hasty. We’re concentrating on the task ahead of getting the performance out of the car and we’ll see where we’re at this weekend.

The British Grand Prix is one of the highlights of the season. The atmosphere at Silverstone is unique and the support from the fans is truly amazing. It’s also our local race as the track is in close proximity to the Brackley and Brixworth factories. It’s a fast and fluid layout that makes for great racing. Hopefully we can put on a good performance and put on a good show.

Facts & Figures: Great Britain Grand Prix

At 5.891 km, Silverstone is the fifth longest track on the current racing calendar. It was previously the fourth longest, but the new track in Las Vegas (6.120 km) moves it down one place. Silverstone’s legendary layout is tough on the tyres, especially the left front tyre, which is heavily loaded at Turns 1, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 15. Silverstone is a high-speed circuit with fast, flowing corners, so the brakes aren’t subjected to a lot of stress. Teams can therefore focus on other areas such as fine-tuning aerodynamics rather than brake cooling. Silverstone is an open former airfield, not sheltered from the wind, so the route is notoriously windy with frequent changes in wind direction. This can have a major impact on vehicle balance and change the behavior of the car. This forces drivers to adjust in terms of braking points, approach speeds when approaching the apex of the corner and acceleration on corner exit. From the start, drivers take two turns before hitting the brakes for the first time in Village (Turn 3). The distance from pole position to this point is 644 metres, but with full tanks at the start of the Grand Prix they have to ease off the accelerator slightly following 225 metres. The only race where the distance from pole position to the first braking zone is longer is held at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico. On the huge start/finish straight, the drivers brake 811 meters away from pole position for the first time. Silverstone also has the second longest pit lane of the season at 509 meters – the pit lane entrance starts following Turn 15, the pit lane exit ends at Turn 2. This means that while the pit lane drive-through time is the third longest of the season at 23 seconds, the time lost is limited , as drivers do not have to pass turns 16, 17, 18 and 1. The track’s long straights and full-throttle sections mean that 78% of the lap is driven at full throttle – the fifth-highest of the season. Silverstone boasts some of the most recognizable corner names in the entire racing world. It’s one of only three circuits on the calendar where the engineers label the corners by their names rather than their numbers; the other two are Spa-Francorchamps and Monaco. Drivers will experience some of the highest lateral g-forces of the season at the British Grand Prix, with an expected maximum of 5g at Turn 11 through the Maggotts-Becketts sequence. Silverstone is something of a home race for the team. The Brackley plant is just nine miles (14.4 km) away and the home of Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains at Brixworth is just over 20 miles (32 km) from the track.
