British Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab tendered his resignation yesterday, following an independent investigation concluded that he bullied civil servants.
In a new setback for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, an independent investigation concluded that Raab, who also holds the position of justice minister, acted in a manner amounting to moral harassment during his previous cabinet posts.
Despite his constant denial of these accusations, Raab wrote in his resignation letter addressed to Sunak: “I requested this investigation, and I pledged to resign if the facts of bullying were proven, whatever they were,” stressing: “I think it is important to respect my word.”
Sunak accepted this resignation, expressing in a letter to his former minister his “great sadness” and praising Rap’s years of service in various governments, without questioning his behavior. Sunak appointed Oliver Dowden as deputy prime minister, while Alex Chuck, a former lawyer, became justice minister.
Raab’s resignation comes at a bad time for the Conservative government, with local elections approaching. It also casts a shadow over the relative stability that Sunak has achieved within his party, following months of scandals and his decline in opinion polls. Raab is the third minister to resign from Sunak’s government, since he took office last October.
The leader of the opposition Labor Party, Keir Starmer, took advantage of the resignation to accuse the prime minister of “weakness” for not taking the decision to dismiss Raab. He said, “Everyone wants strong leadership (in the government), and it is clear that this is not the case.”
