British company creates jet fuel from human feces

As human feces can turn jet fuel. At least, that’s what a British company called Firefly Green Fuels managed to do by transforming waste into kerosene. In fact, tests were carried out and the results showed that the compound is practically the same as the standard fuel currently used in aircraft.

James Hygate is the company’s CEO and commented on the news:

We wanted to find a really low-value raw material that was highly abundant. And of course, the poop is plentiful

The idea of producing fuel from feces comes from the executive’s intention following being successful in transforming canola oil into biodiesel for cars and trucks. In this sense, he teamed up with the Portuguese chemist to develop this process that begins with the creation called bio-crude, which resembles oil in general.

This substance, in short, has a chemical behavior similar to that of crude oil. This liquid is heated and then the gases are distilled at specific temperatures to achieve a correct “cut” to produce different types of fuels. Little by little, the new liquid reaches the collection tubes.

Hygate states that, despite the chemical similarities, the new fuel has no fossil carbon and also talks regarding the use of energy in production:

Of course it involves energy (in production), but when we look at the life cycle of the fuel, saving 90% is unbelievable. So yes, we have to use energy, but it is much less compared to the production of fossil fuels.

To give you an idea, the new product has a 90% smaller carbon footprint compared to what is normally used on planes. Currently, biokerosene is being tested in DLR Institute for Combustion Technology at the German Aerospace Center in collaboration with the Washington State Universityus United States.

Even with Hygate’s excitement, this kerosene is still far from being able to replace standard fuel. In this sense, he calculates that each person produces 4-5 liters of waste for biofuel. Therefore, 10,000 people’s feces would be needed annually for a one-way flight from London to New York.

Be that as it may, the executive believes that the opportunities are enormous. Therefore, it remains to be seen what the future will be like for fuels that emit less carbon than those used today.
